GR43 - Grande Rota do Património e Ambiente das Terras Altas de Fafe

Among granite villages and the mountain horizons

The GR43 is a thematic route that dives into the heart of the Fafe Highlands. With a total length of 50 kilometers in a circular format, this path celebrates the identity of local populations and their relationship with the land. Crossing fifteen rural centers, the route provides contact with ancient knowledge and a rare harmony between people and nature.

The Three Stages of the Route

Stage 1: Várzea Cova to Mós (16 kilometers)
The journey begins in Várzea Cova and climbs towards Bastelo and Aboim. In this area, there is an opportunity to visit the Museum of the Mill and the People of Aboim, as well as several traditional windmills. The trek passes through the villages of Figueiró do Monte and Barbeita de Cima, ending in Mós, a locality that belongs to the Villages of Portugal network.

Stage 2: Mós to Pontido (17 kilometers)
This phase of the journey includes the climb to Monte das Lameiras, which represents the highest point of the entire route. The descent happens through Gontim, Luilhas, and Argande until reaching the Queimadela Dam. Before reaching the end of the stage, the trail passes through the small village of Repulo and ends at the Tourist Village of Pontido.

Stage 3: Pontido to Várzea Cova (17 kilometers)
The final section flanks the waters of the Queimadela Dam and moves towards Calcões and Pedraído. The trail follows various cultivated fields and brings the walker closer to the Lagoa area. The return to the starting point in Várzea Cova occurs after crossing a dense and well preserved oak forest.

Heritage and Landscape

The main objective of this long-distance trail is to preserve and promote the built heritage in the northern zone of the municipality. Throughout the journey, walkers find signs of a resilient architecture where granite prevails in communal ovens and granaries. The landscape alternates between the serenity of agricultural valleys and the raw nature of mountain areas.

Tips

  • Planning: Since the total distance is long, dividing the walk into three days is the most balanced choice to enjoy each village.
  • Navigation: Signage serves as a support but the use of a GPS track remains essential to ensure correct orientation between the different settlements.
  • Rest Stops: Take advantage of the villages in the Villages of Portugal network to experience local gastronomy and rest in authentic environments.
  • Equipment: Choose sturdy footwear suitable for long walks on mountain terrain that can be demanding for the feet.
