GR50 - Etapa 3: Lamas de Mouro ➔ Peneda

GR50 - Peneda-Gerês Long-distance Path - Stage 3: Lamas de Mouro ➔ Peneda

Stage 3 of the GR50 - Peneda-Gerês Long-Distance Path links the Lamas de Mouro Gate, in the municipality of Melgaço, to the village of Peneda, already in the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez. With a little over 8 km, it follows the transition between the Mouro River valley, Portela do Lagarto and the Peneda valley, crossing forest areas, watercourses, old mountain paths and agricultural areas. In the first part, the route follows the surroundings of the Mouro River, passing through mixed woodland and former forest houses recovered or associated with mountain management. During the climb to Portela do Lagarto, the highest point of this stage, sections of the old stone pavement that once linked Lamas de Mouro to Senhora da Peneda can still be observed. After Portela do Lagarto, the stage approaches the Tieiras oak woodland and follows the valley formed by the Tieiras River and, further ahead, by the Peneda River. The landscape alternates between woodland, riverside areas and small agricultural fields set in the bottom of the valley, revealing the rural mosaic characteristic of Peneda. The arrival at Peneda takes place near the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Peneda, one of the main religious and heritage landmarks in this area of the Peneda-Gerês National Park.
