Volta do Planalto
On the Monsanto plateau with views over Lisbon
The Plateau Loop takes place in Monsanto Forest Park, offering a comprehensive experience through the highest areas of this natural space. It is a circular route of approximately 7.7 km, crossing the Monsanto plateau at elevations above 220 meters, with a landscape shaped by gentle ascents and descents.
Along the way, the surroundings vary between Mediterranean woodlands and areas dominated by Buçaco cypress trees, creating a diverse and engaging landscape. This variety of environments provides a dynamic walking experience, with constant contact with nature.
The route passes several notable landmarks, including the ruins of Moinho das Três Cruzes, the Parque do Calhau with its montado-like characteristics, the Águas Livres Aqueduct, visible through its ventilation shafts, and Parque da Pedra, set within a former quarry. The former Panoramic Restaurant, an iconic structure, also stands out along the route.
At certain points, the elevated position allows for wide views over Lisbon and the Tagus River, creating a striking contrast between the natural surroundings and the nearby urban landscape.
Combining nature, heritage, and landscape diversity, the Volta do Planalto stands out as one of the most complete trails in Monsanto, ideal for those looking to explore the park in a more comprehensive way.
