PR1 BRC - Da Serra Colorada ao Cerro do Calvário

Through the open landscapes and ancient paths of Barrancos

The PR1 BRC - From Serra Colorada to Cerro do Calvário is a circular trail starting in Barrancos, in the far east of Alentejo, close to the Spanish border. The route crosses the village and the surrounding landscape, marked by the historical relationship between both sides of the border and by the presence of old paths, boundary markers, olive groves, small vegetable gardens and montado areas. Along the trail, several elements linked to the border history of Barrancos stand out, including former control posts, paved sections and boundary markers. The passage through the Serra Colorada area offers views over the open landscape of the Barrancos territory, where Alentejo and Spanish influences meet. The route also follows areas near the Murtega Stream, where heritage elements linked to water and former rural activity can be found, such as fountains, mills and bridges. Other points of interest include the Lancheira Fountain, the Pipa Fountain and Mill, the Minancos Mine and Cerro do Calvário. The walk combines urban surroundings, rural paths, forested areas and old border access routes, providing an insight into the unique identity of Barrancos, its geographical position and the historical connection between landscape, settlement and border life.
