The Maroiço Route starts and finishes near the Queimadela Dam, following rural paths and old routes once used by shepherds through the settlements of Monte, Casal de Estime, Luilhas and Queimadela.
The route initially follows the Queimadela reservoir before continuing through a landscape marked by agricultural terraces, stone walls, oak woods and watercourses. These elements reflect the relationship between the natural environment and the traditional ways in which the land has been occupied and used.
As the route reaches the higher areas of the Maroiço mountain range, the landscape opens up to wider views over the surrounding region. From Laje Branca, there are views over the Ermal reservoir and, in good visibility, towards the Castle of Póvoa de Lanhoso and the Sameiro Sanctuary, with the Gerês and Cabreira mountain ranges on the horizon.
The diversity of the landscape is also reflected in its vegetation and wildlife. Alder, ash and poplar trees can be found near the watercourses, while heather, gorse and broom are more common in drier areas. Various bird species and other animals associated with fields, woodland and watercourses can also be observed along the route.
