Get ready for an adventure that takes you to the heart of the Serra da Estrela! The Poço do Inferno Route, in Manteigas, is a short but intense hike where nature and history intertwine at every step.
On this charming trail, you'll experience an incredible contrast of landscapes. On one side, deciduous and coniferous forests create a vibrant natural atmosphere. On the other hand, terraces and "cortes" (small agricultural structures) tell the story of human life in the mountains.
The highlight of your walk is the impressive Poço do Inferno waterfall. Standing around 10 metres tall, this geological wonder is one of the most iconic sights in Manteigas and the Serra da Estrela. During the coldest winters, the waterfall can even freeze, creating an unforgettable spectacle.
Along the way, you'll be rewarded with stunning views over the Zêzere River Valley and the Leandres Stream Valley. The variety of flora is remarkable, featuring species such as the rare yew (found only in Manteigas and the Peneda-Gerês Mountains), birch trees, and daffodils. Keep an eye out for local wildlife too. You might spot wild rabbits, foxes, kingfishers, and the Lusitanian salamander.
Let yourself be carried away by the beauty and sounds of the mountains, on a route short in distance but vast in sensation.
