PR1 SBG - Meandros do Côa

The PR1 SBG - Meanders of the Côa follows the valley of the Côa River, near Sabugal, offering an immersive experience in one of the most well-preserved natural settings in the region. Along the trail, the river winds through schist hills and granite areas, forming the characteristic meanders that give the route its name. This geological diversity is reflected in the landscape, with valleys that alternate between wider and more enclosed sections, creating a dynamic and ever-changing environment. The vegetation is particularly lush, with a well-developed riparian gallery featuring large alders, ashes, and willows along the riverbanks, as well as oak and chestnut woodlands on the slopes. This setting supports a rich biodiversity, where visitors may observe various bird species such as mallards and herons, and, with some luck, otters in their natural habitat. Human heritage is also present throughout the route, with old weirs, water channels, and traditional watermills that reflect the historical relationship between local communities and the river. These elements are harmoniously integrated into the landscape, reinforcing the trail’s authentic character. This is a trail that prioritises close contact with the river and its surrounding nature, ideal for those seeking tranquillity, biodiversity, and a strong connection between natural and cultural heritage.
