The From Senhora da Graça to Ceira's Valley trail follows the valley of the Ceira River through a landscape where geology, waterways and human occupation come together. The river has shaped the organisation of the territory, from agricultural fields established on alluvial soils to structures built to make use of its resources.
Along the route, the Ceira gorge and geological sections reveal the importance of natural processes in shaping the landscape. The river cuts through resistant rock formations, creating a valley of considerable geomorphological expression that is one of the defining features of the area.
The former railway alignment adds another dimension to the landscape. Designed to extend the Lousã Branch Line to Arganil, the railway was never completed, but its alignment now follows the river along part of the route, crossing rural areas and small settlements.
Further on, the landscape opens up beside the river, among gravel deposits, cork oaks and a mosaic of agricultural fields. Among mills, water channels, oil presses, bridges and other traces of traditional activities, the trail reveals the long-standing relationship between local communities and the Ceira, with the remarkable Epigenia of the Ceira as its defining feature.
