The Journey to Prehistory is a circular trail developed mainly on the Serra da Freita plateau, starting and ending in the village of Merujal. The route allows walkers to discover some of the most emblematic places in this area of Arouca Geopark, marked by geosites, mountain villages and evidence of ancient human occupation.
Along the walk, the landscape of Serra da Freita is closely linked to the singular geology of this territory. Among the main highlights are the Pedras Parideiras, Frecha da Mizarela and Pedras Boroas do Junqueiro, geosites that help explain the natural and scientific importance of the so-called Enchanted Mountain.
The trail also passes through some characteristic villages of this mountain area, such as Merujal, Cabaços, Castanheira and Albergaria da Serra. These places reveal the relationship between human occupation, the mountain landscape and the traditional paths of the plateau.
The prehistoric component is present through remains associated with funerary monuments, such as Portela da Anta and the Monte Calvo burial mounds. These elements reinforce the historical reading of the trail, connecting the present-day landscape with ancient forms of human presence in Serra da Freita.
By combining geology, mountain villages, archaeological heritage and mountain scenery, this trail offers a broad reading of Serra da Freita and its importance within Arouca Geopark.
