The PR2 - Between the Cávado River and the Atlantic is a circular trail of around 5.7 km, located in the parish of Fão, in the municipality of Esposende. The route starts near Clube Náutico de Fão and crosses an area within the North Coast Natural Park, between the left bank of the Cávado River, the sand spit, the Ofir Pine Forest and the Atlantic dune system.
Along the route, the landscape is marked by the transition between the Cávado estuary and the seafront. The proximity to the river, dunes, beach and forest areas allows walkers to observe different natural environments within a relatively short distance.
The trail allows visitors to discover some of the most relevant natural elements of this coastal area, including the Cávado sand spit, the dune system and the habitats associated with the Ofir Pine Forest. These spaces play an important role in the conservation of local biodiversity, providing refuge for several species of fauna and flora.
The cultural and historical component is also present along the route, with particular interest in the Bonança Chapel, the Bonança Beacon and the Barreiras Medieval Cemetery. These elements help explain the human occupation of this coastal territory and the relationship between local communities, the river, the sea and old paths.
By combining river scenery, dune environments, pine forest and local heritage, this trail offers an accessible reading of the connection between the Cávado and the Atlantic, in a territory where nature and human memory stand side by side.
