PR2 PCT MGL - Caminho dos Galegos - Rota de Santiago

The PR2 PCT MGL - Caminho dos Galegos - Santiago Route follows an ancient section associated with the Way of Saint James, crossing the southern area of Penalva do Castelo and the rural surroundings of Mangualde.

The route follows traditional paths bordered by granite walls, old agricultural tracks and landscapes shaped by centuries of agro-silvo-pastoral activities. Along the way, villages, chapels and other elements reveal the long-standing relationship between local communities and this territory.

One of the main highlights is the Old Pilgrims’ Hospital, located near the Ludares Creek, a group of ruins associated with supporting travellers who followed these pilgrimage routes. The crossing of the creek is made over traditional granite stepping stones, preserving the historical connection between the paths and the surrounding landscape.

Between woodland areas, agricultural fields and small watercourses, the route also reveals other elements of rural heritage, such as old watermills and traditional structures connected to water use.
