PR3 MDB - Fisgas de Ermelo

Waterfalls, lagoons, and mountains: a journey through the heart of Alvão

The PR3 MDB - Fisgas de Ermelo is a circular trail that crosses some of the most emblematic landscapes of the Alvão Natural Park, developing between the village of Ermelo, the Olo River valley and the Fisgas de Ermelo area. The route passes through mountain terrain marked by steep slopes, watercourses and wide views over the valley. Along the trail, highlights include the Fisgas de Ermelo Waterfalls, one of the largest waterfalls in Portugal, as well as the Piocas de Cima and Piocas de Baixo, small natural lagoons formed by the Olo River. The route also crosses several rural environments characteristic of the region, including mountain villages, traditional irrigated fields and traditional schist and slate buildings. The landscape is marked by native vegetation, rocky outcrops and grazing areas, where Maronesa cattle and goat herds are commonly seen in the higher areas. This is a demanding trail, characterised by long ascents and descents, but rewarded by its landscape diversity and proximity to the natural features of the Olo River valley.
