PR3 PNV - Rota das Conheiras

Along the traces of gold on the banks of the Ocreza River

The PR3 PNV - Conheiras Route is a circular trail starting in Sobral Fernando, in the municipality of Proença-a-Nova. The route develops around the Ocreza River and the Fróia and Sarzedinha streams, crossing pine woodland, slopes with views over Sobral Fernando and Foz do Cobrão, riverside areas and places marked by old mining remains.

The most distinctive feature of the trail is the conheiras, extensive accumulations of pebbles found along the banks of the Ocreza. These spoil heaps bear witness to former gold extraction, mainly associated with the Roman and medieval periods, although the area was also linked to the exploitation of other metals, such as iron and silver.

Along the route, there are also elements linked to the traditional occupation of the territory, such as beehives, weirs and old milling structures. Among the most interesting places are the Vale das Pedras Weir and Watermill, beside the Sarzedinha stream, as well as the confluence of this stream with the Ocreza River, where the riverside landscape becomes particularly expressive.

The approach to the Ocreza valley allows visitors to observe riparian galleries, natural pools and cliffs associated with the Vale do Almourão, one of the most striking landscapes in this area of Beira Baixa. In quieter areas, especially in spring, it may be possible to observe fauna associated with aquatic environments, such as otters, grey herons, mallards and cormorants.
