The PR4 MTG - Coal Route is a circular hiking trail with a length of approximately 20 km, located in the Serra da Estrela, in the municipality of Manteigas. It is a trail of difficult difficulty, with an accumulated elevation gain of about 975 meters. The route starts near the Municipal Archive of Manteigas and heads towards the village of Penhas Douradas. Along the way, you can enjoy the breathtaking landscapes of the Serra da Estrela, including the reservoir of Vale do Rossim and Vale das Éguas. The Coal Route is closely related to the history of the region. In the past, charcoal was produced in the mountains and transported to Manteigas, where it was sold. The route follows some of the old paths used by charcoal burners. Some points of interest along the route: - Fraga da Cruz: A majestic granite hill with a panoramic view of the region. - Fragão do Corvo: A viewpoint located in the area of Penhas Douradas, at an altitude of about 1450 meters. - Village of Penhas Douradas: A small mountain village with stone houses and narrow streets.
