The Santa Quitéria Route is a deep journey through the identity of Alenquer, where Cretaceous geology meets ancient religious traditions. This trail, which passes through the villages of Meca, Catém, Bogarréus, São Brás, and Casal Monteiro, offers a typically agricultural setting, marked by vineyards and orchards that transform the landscape with the seasons.
The central point of this trail is the village of Meca. Here, the Basilica of Santa Quitéria (completed in 1799) stands out for its neoclassical architecture, evoking the grandeur of monuments such as the Mafra Convent and the Estrela Basilica. In front of it, the curious circular stone cross is more than just an ornament: it is the stage for the traditional blessing of cattle, where animals circle the structure three times to invoke the Saint's protection.
The trail is inextricably linked to the figure of Santa Quitéria, a 2nd-century martyr who, according to legend, walked with her own head in her hands after being beheaded. The cult in Meca allegedly began in 1238, after the discovery of an image of the saint, becoming a place of pilgrimage and devotion ever since, especially for shepherds seeking protection for their flocks.
One of the highlights of the route is the passage through Cabeço de Santa Quitéria. Although basalt mining during the 20th century altered its original sharp profile, this site is one of the rare volcanic chimneys of the Lisbon Volcanic Complex, dating back approximately 72 million years. The climb to Bogarréus and the "volcano" requires some physical effort but rewards the hiker with panoramic views over the region.
