PR5 - Livraria do Paiva

Through the geosites and meanders of the Paiva

The PR5 - Paiva Bookshelf Trail follows one of the most emblematic sections of the Paiva River valley, within the territory of the Arouca Geopark. Along the route, the highlight is the unique geological formation known as the “Paiva Bookshelf”, where the quartzite layers, arranged in a near-vertical position, resemble books lined up on a shelf.

This trail allows visitors to observe a deeply incised valley, shaped by the river over millions of years, revealing a landscape of great geological and natural value. Along the route, it is possible to observe ichnofossils, traces of marine organism activity dating back around 450 million years, visible at specific points of the trail.

Throughout the route, the close contact with the river and the rocky slopes provides an experience marked by tranquillity and the authenticity of one of the most preserved rivers in Portugal.

This trail offers an excellent opportunity to explore the natural heritage of the Paiva valley, where geology and landscape combine to create a unique setting.
