PR5 MAC - Rota da Queixoperra

The PR5 MAC - Queixoperra Route is a rural trail located in the Union of Parishes of Mação, Aboboreira and Penhascoso. The route crosses valleys, hills, streams and open landscapes, combining natural heritage, elements linked to the traditional use of water and several cultural points of interest.

Water is one of the defining features of the trail, visible in fountains, springs, streams, small dams and old hydraulic structures. Among the most relevant places is Poço das Talhas, where restored watermills associated with cereal milling can be found, as well as the Marmitas das Azenhas, classified as a geosite.

Along the walk, different natural environments can be observed, from riverside areas with butcher's-broom and ivy to pine woodland, scrubland and areas with native species such as cork oaks, strawberry trees and terebinths. The fauna includes birds such as the booted eagle, common buzzard and golden oriole, as well as several species of insects, including the two-tailed pasha and the Cleopatra butterfly.

Cultural heritage appears at several points along the route, with particular interest in Travessa do Encalhão, the old Fonte de Mergulho, Fonte do Ribeiro and the restored structures of Poço das Talhas. Geology is also an important feature, namely through the Marmitas das Azenhas and the fossil tracks of Serra do Carvalhal.
