PR5 TBR - Trilho da Águia do Sarilhão

The Águia do Sarilhão Trail is located in the parish of Campo do Gerês, in the municipality of Terras de Bouro, in an area strongly connected to the cultural and ethnographic heritage of the Serra do Gerês. The route develops through a broad and relatively flat valley, between the Campo do Gerês Museum Centre and the left bank of the Vilarinho da Furna reservoir, following the surroundings of the Ribeiro de Rodas. Along the trail, the route crosses rural settlements and narrow streets where elements of traditional architecture can still be observed, such as granaries, houses with cross-topped roofs and wooden balconies facing the courtyards. This built landscape reflects the community and rural life that shaped local history. One of the main heritage features of the route is the presence of the ancient Via Nova XVIII, also known as Geira, the Roman road that linked Bracara Augusta to Asturica Augusta. In this section, milestones XXVII, XXVIII and XXIX stand out, marking the passage of the Roman road through the Campo do Gerês area. Near milestone XXIX, there are also remains linked to the defence of the Portuguese border, such as the Campo do Gerês trench and Casa das Peças. Located within the Peneda-Gerês National Park, the trail also approaches emblematic places such as Fraga do Sarilhão, Mata da Albergaria and the former community village of Vilarinho da Furna, now submerged by the reservoir.
