PR6 VLG GDM - Trilho de Silveirinhos

A mountain trail through forest and iron-rich waters

The PR6 VLG GDM - Silveirinhos Trail starts at the Chapel of Santa Justa, at the top of the mountain range of the same name, descending through heathland and areas of forest replanted with native species until reaching the Silveirinhos stream.

This temporary watercourse accompanies much of the route along narrow paths and forms a small valley on the western slope of the Santa Justa mountain range. Despite its small size, the stream plays an important role in local biodiversity, providing habitat for species such as the golden-striped salamander, Iberian frog and marbled newt.

The stream bed has a distinctive orange colour caused by iron-rich water runoff associated with the geological history of the region. Along its banks, invasive acacias are gradually being replaced by native species as part of the recovery of the vegetation.

At Alto do Ramalho, in São Pedro da Cova, the landscape opens out towards the Santa Justa and Pias mountain ranges and the meanders of the Ferreira River, at a point where other walking trails provide opportunities to further explore this protected landscape.
