The Discovering the Forest trail crosses the heart of the Serra da Lousã, through a landscape dominated by extensive woodland, schist soils and large trees. The scenery changes with the seasons, but the forest remains a strong presence throughout much of the route.
The landscape also preserves traces of the work of the former Forestry Service, which was responsible for afforesting parts of the mountain range from the first half of the 20th century onwards and for creating paths and support structures. Along the route, this heritage can be seen in features such as the former forest ranger's house at Hortas and the Cabril tank.
Between forest tracks and small watercourses, the trail crosses slopes covered by woodland and habitats associated with wetter areas. In some places, the forest opens onto the surrounding peaks, offering wider views across the Serra da Lousã before closing in again among the broad-leaved trees.
The connection between forest and water remains present towards the final part of the route, with the crossing of small streams and areas providing suitable habitats for various amphibian species. The trail then returns to Terreiro das Bruxas, completing a circuit strongly shaped by the presence of the forest.
The first forest plantations in the Serra da Lousã began in the mid-1920s and contributed to the reforestation of a significant part of the mountain range. The former Forestry Service was also responsible for opening several paths and connecting them to the villages.
