The PR9 ACT - Vaqueiros Typical Village Interpretive Trail is a short route of around 3.6 km, set around the village of Vaqueiros, in the municipality of Alcoutim. The trail allows walkers to discover the rural mountain landscape surrounding the village, in a territory shaped by pastoral activity, montado landscapes, small agricultural areas and leisure spaces near water.
The place name Vaqueiros reflects the pastoral identity of the locality, still present in the surrounding landscape. Along the route, there are areas of cork oak and holm oak montado, olive groves, stone pine plantations, wheat fields and vegetable gardens close to the village, forming a rural landscape typical of inland Algarve.
The spontaneous vegetation includes species such as strawberry trees, gum rockroses, lavenders and gorses. In spring, after the first rains, bulbous and flowering plants may appear, including lilies, sea squill and several species of wildflowers, adding colour to the slopes and open areas.
The local fauna is associated with scrubland, montado areas, open ground and valleys near the village. Among the birds recorded for this area are golden plovers, northern wheatears, yellow wagtails, stonechats, larks, black redstarts, goldfinches, serins and several species of warblers. Among the mammals, wild boar, fox, Egyptian mongoose, rabbit, hare and genet may occur.
The route approaches Vale da Parra, the Vaqueiros dam and the Fonte da Parra area, where there is a picnic park. These places reinforce the connection between the village, water, rest areas and the surrounding natural landscape.
In the village of Vaqueiros, the Main Church, dedicated to Saint Peter, stands out. With 16th-century origins and later remodellings, it is one of the main heritage elements of the locality, preserving altarpieces, paintings and other artistic features of interest inside.
This trail offers a simple and accessible way to discover Vaqueiros and its surroundings, combining rural landscape, religious heritage, pastoral memory, rest areas and natural elements characteristic of inland Alcoutim.
