Between Fojo, Codeçal, Gosende, Cotelo and Campo Benfeito, the PR3 CDR - Oak Trees Trail crosses a mountain landscape marked by rural villages, grazing areas, watercourses and well-preserved Pyrenean oak woodland. It is a circular trail of around 7.5 km, set in Serra de Montemuro, in the municipality of Castro Daire.
The route starts near the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Refúgio, in the place of Fojo, at around 1040 metres of altitude. From there, it crosses a sequence of mountain settlements where the natural landscape intersects with traditional human occupation, with particular emphasis on Quercus pyrenaica oak woods, agricultural fields and areas linked to pastoral activity.
In Gosende and Cotelo, the trail passes through rural villages where pastoralism remains part of the local identity. The Arouquesa cattle breed is one of the most characteristic presences in this landscape, associated with meadows, pastures and mountain paths.
Before reaching Campo Benfeito, the trail crosses the valley of the Balsemão River, where an extensive peatland area stands out. In winter, this section may be waterlogged, so suitable footwear is recommended.
Campo Benfeito, part of the Aldeias de Portugal network, adds a cultural dimension to the route. In this village, walkers can find Capuchinhas de Montemuro, housed in the former primary school, and the Teatro Regional da Serra do Montemuro, two important references in local community and cultural life.
Overall, the Oak Trees Trail combines mountain scenery, oak woodland, pastures, mountain villages and cultural heritage, offering a close reading of Serra de Montemuro and the rural way of life in this part of Castro Daire.
